The summary of the project ‘Banned Books’
Written by Karine Gomtsyan
On May 16, a group of 12th graders presented the second part
of their class project, entitled "Banned Books." The project aimed to
explore and investigate the reasons behind the banning of well-known books from
the 20th and 21st centuries. Students selected and researched worldwide
bestsellers such as "The
Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini, "The
Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho, "Fahrenheit
451" by Ray Bradbury, "Frankenstein;
or, The Modern Prometheus" by Mary Shelley, "Lolita"
by Vladimir Nabokov, and more. I participated in the event as a host. During
the presentation, students briefly introduced the plots and main ideas of the
chosen books. They discussed the leading characters, including protagonists and
antagonists, and shared their own thoughts on the epilogues of the books. All
of the presented books are global favorites, so the students were very excited
to uncover the controversial stories behind the decisions to ban them. Some
students believed that the bans were unjust, while others tried to defend the
decisions. However, everyone successfully explained the reasons and arguments
behind each book's banning. Read Karine Gomtsyan’s coverage.
